I’m excited to share this guide with you which I’ve packed with photography location suggestions

and images from my portfolio to inspire your next family, photoshoot.

As an outdoors and nature-loving soon to be dad and photographer, I’ve spent the past 15 years exploring the beautiful parks and foothills around Denver. I love to hike, bike and explore, and over the years I’ve discovered countless stunning locations in Colorado that combine natural beauty with easy access.

In this guide, I’ve narrowed it down to my favorite eight, and I share these with you here. So, if you’re dreaming of family photos surrounded by nature, golden hour light, and with space for your kids and pups to run wild, on the pages that follow, you’ll find my top location spots for photoshoots. Great news! They are also all within 40 minutes of the city.

Each location offers that signature Colorado beauty without the need for you to drag the kids or your partner on a long drive or strenuous hike. They’re perfect for relaxed, meaningful photo sessions because they offer trails that work for all ages and that beautiful Colorado mountain backdrop we all love.

From peaceful, tree-lined creeks to wide-open vistas, these spots are perfect for slowing down, connecting with nature, and capturing timeless, heartfelt moments with the people who matter most.

  1. Mount Falcon West Trailhead | Indian Hills, Colorado

Mount Falcon West is one of the most scenic andversatile sunset spots in the Denver area for family portrait photography.

It offers a beautiful mix of forest trails, meadows, rock outcroppings and expansive mountain views, which are all within a 10–15-minute easy walk from the parking lot.

At golden hour, it provides a wonderful backdrop with the setting sun and golden natural light. It often has that warm, glowing quality, along with dramatic, colorful sunsets that cast the most beautiful golden glow across the landscape.

It’s a hit with families who have energetic kids. There’s space to explore, climb, and roam freely, and the trails are wide and stroller-friendly. There are also picnic tables at the parking lot as well as the stunning Eagle’s Eye Shelter which is a great place to have dinner before or after our session.

For those near Denver who want a true Colorado outdoorsy feel with easy access and sweeping sunset mountain views, this is an ideal location.


2. South Valley Park | Littleton, Colorado

This gem of a park in Littleton captures everything people love about Colorado’s landscape. While Red Rocks Amphitheatre is famous for its dramatic cliffs, South Valley Park offers similar red rock formations with far fewer crowds and easy access.

Open meadows, sandstone ridges, and big skies make it a beautiful and versatile spot for family photos. There’s even a small pond that reflects the evening light perfectly at golden hour.

The wide, gentle trails make it easy for families with young kids or grandparents to explore, and the soft, natural light that fills the valley in late afternoon adds warmth and depth to portraits. With open views and colorful sunrises and sunsets, every backdrop feels relaxed and authentically Colorado.

Whether you’re after playful candid moments or timeless family portraits, South Valley Park is easy to reach, family-friendly, and full of classic Colorado scenery during every season.



3. South Mesa Trailhead | Boulder, Colorado

  • Easy 10–15 minute gentle walk from parking lot brings you across a beautiful stream and to big views of mountains and flatirons

  • 35 minutes from Denver & 10 minutes from Boulder

South Mesa Trailhead near Boulder, Colorado captures so much of what makes the foohills so beautiful. Warm evening light, open meadows, and sweeping views of the Flatirons & El Dorado Canyon.

It’s one of the most versatile family photo locations along the Front Range. It offers a mix of scenery from the iconic Flatirons to open meadows, along with a peaceful stream lined with hardwood trees. The historic Dunn House adds a rustic, timeless touch.

It has very easy access, a large parking lot ( a $5 cash payment if not a Boulder County resident is needed to park) and gentle trails make it ideal for families with kids or dogs. With so many different backgrounds in one spot, it’s easy to create a full, varied opportunities. It’s also stunning any time of year.


4. Lookout Mountain | Golden, Colorado

  • Stunning sunrise and sunset lighting

  • Incredible city and mountain views

  • Wildflowers and varied landscapes

  • Wildlife sightings possible

  • 25 minutes from Denver

Close to the city but packed with mountain charm, Lookout Mountain offers panoramic views over Denver and Clear

Creek Canyon. It holds a special place for me as my parents have lived on top of the mountain for over 10 years and has been a place with cherished memories and experiences.

It has that classic Colorado feel without needing to head deep into the high country. It offers a little bit of everything: convenience, natural beauty, and big views. There’s also abundant wildlife.

From the eastern overlooks, you’ll get stunning views of the Denver skyline and the plains beyond. On the western side, you’re treated to dramatic vistas over Clear Creek Canyon and even glimpses of the Continental Divide.

And with downtown Golden just below, it’s easy to make your session part of a larger family outing. Many clients choose to grab dinner, ice cream, or wander through the charming shops after their photoshoot.


5. City Park | Denver, Colorado

City Park is one of Denver’s most beloved urban parks. Spanning over 330 acres and with sweeping mountain

views, a view of the Denver skyline, shady tree-lined paths, quiet lakes, and wide-open green space, it offers the perfect mix of nature and city charm.

It’s perfect for families who want a safe space for their kids to run around, play near the water and for parents to enjoy the beautiful light and mood at Ferrill Lake with its fountain and lovely pavilion.

The park is full of visual variety from flower gardens, a historic boathouse, paddleboats, gazebos and the city skyline. All of which create lovely backdrops. Whether you're looking for timeless portraits or candid moments of joy and connection, City Park gives you space to breathe, move, and just be yourselves.

Best of all, it’s easy to access and close to downtown, making it a favorite for families who want both beauty

and convenience. It’s wonderful during all seasons and great for a winter photo session if you’re looking for something a bit more mild than the high country mountains.


6. Evergreen Lake | Evergreen, Colorado

  • Cooler summer temps than Denver

This charming mountain town offers an easy getaway and a picturesque lake that’s perfect forrelaxed, scenic portraits with a view. It has a true mountain town feel, and yet you won’t have to make a long trek deep into the Rockies to get there. It’s a treat during all seasons. In the summer you’ll see people paddleboarding on the lake, golfing and picnicing. In the wintertime, they lake freezes & the convert it into ice rinks for skating, and there are ice fishers sitting out in the middle of the lake too.

With wooden boardwalks, pine forests, a boathouse and picnic areas, there’s something for everyone. I think it’s an especially perfect place for families. Kids (and dogs) can explore the lakeside path, splash their toes, and run among the plentiful green space, and everyone has the space to feel relaxed. In the winter, there is plenty of space to make snow angels, rent ice skates, sled down the hills and enjoy the winter wonderland.

Nearby downtown restaurants and shops make this a lively yet peaceful location. After your session, why not grab dinner in the hallmark picturesque town and create a fun family outing?


7. Lair o The Bear Park | Idledale, Colorado

  • Directions

  • Intimate, shady forest, open meadows and beautiful mountain stream

  • Flat, stroller-friendly trails - ideal for little ones

  • Wooden bridges and soft golden hour light

  • Peaceful and low-key with a mountain feel

  • 35 minutes from Denver

Tucked into Bear Creek Canyon, this peaceful park is perfect if you love shaded forests, gentle trails, and mountain stream vibes.

Open meadows, a tree-lined pathway along a winding creek, complete with wooden footbridges, create an intimate, relaxed setting.

While it may not offer sweeping mountain vistas, the setting feels intimate and inviting. This place has a natural, intimate mountain feel, and especially around sunrise and sunset, a soft golden light filters beautifully

through the trees. Kids love it here. There are rocks to hop across, trails to explore, and water to wade in and splash through. The trails are flat and stroller-friendly, with shaded areas that stay cool even on hot summer days.

There's also ample parking and scenic picnic spots if you want to enjoy a meal before or after our photo session. If you're drawn to mountain streams and softer canyon beauty, Lair O’ the Bear is an ideal backdrop for summer family photo sessions.


8. Standley Lake | Westminster, Colorado

Directions

  • 10 minute walk to lakeshore from parking lot

  • Great for sunrise and sunset sessions with light reflecting on the water

Standley Lake offers the perfect blend of nature and accessibility. As one of the largest bodies of water in the Denver metro area, it features beautiful views of the western mountain skyline, wide-open skies, and plenty of room to roam.

The west-facing shoreline catches golden light as the sun sets, creating soft reflections and warm tones that make for magical evening portraits. Even in winter, this spot stays surprisingly mild, with minimal snow accumulation thanks to all the sunshine it receives — ideal for crisp, clear sessions year-round.

Families love Standley Lake for its open space and easygoing feel. There’s room for active kids to explore, it’s dog-friendly, and its location on the northwest side of the metro area makes it perfect for those who want natural beauty without driving up into the mountains.
