A laid back family adventure: genuine smiles, dirty feet, and one happy little explorer
At the end of a big multigenerational family session at The Fort Restaurant in Morrison, Jacob came up to me and asked if we could set up a second shoot. This time with just him, his wife Sarah, and their 8-month-old infant son, Charlie.
We had just wrapped up a session with his siblings, their spouses, and parents, and Jacob and Sarah both said they really appreciated how easy and fun the whole thing felt. They wanted that same relaxed vibe for a more intimate session… just the three of them.
Jacob grew up here in Colorado but lives in Washington now. They were in town visiting his folks and wanted to document this chapter with their little guy before heading onwards to Wisconsin to visit Sarah’s parents. They wanted a laid back, outdoorsy, and true Colorado feel. Mount Falcon West checked all the boxes, so I recommended it for them. It’s one of my favorite Denver foothills outdoor spots: mellow trails, ponderosa pines, open meadows with wildflowers, cool rock formations, and great views of the western slopes and sky. It's also super easy to carry a toddler or bring a stroller.
We met up a little earlier in the afternoon to work around Charlie’s 7:30 bedtime. Luckily, we got that lovely soft light from some storms brewing in the distance. Jacob’s mom tagged along too and was the real MVP. She helped carry things, made Charlie laugh behind the scenes, and kept the energy light and fun. If I’m ever in the market to hire a toddler hype woman, I know where to look.
We wandered the trail, paused for some gentle direction and ‘formal’ family shots, then we leaned into the candid, creative and playful moments just letting Charlie do his thing. They brought a blanket, which I always recommend for families with babies. It makes for cozy, natural-feeling images and gives the kiddo a place to settle. Charlie was full of smiles the whole time, which for an 8-month-old, is kind of incredible. Guess he loves those great outdoors!
If you’re hoping to capture those fleeting early days with your baby in a way that feels fun and easy, I’d love to help you freeze these fleeting moments of early childhood. They grow fast, and one day, they’ll be too cool for this. So let’s make the most of it now.
