Mount Falcon West Trailhead Large Family Photography
Joy, generations, and Nigerian heritage: Captured during golden hour in the Denver foothills
Oyin reached out while planning a family vacation to Denver, Colorado, hoping to capture something different. Unique photography of her large multi-generational family that celebrated their diverse backgrounds.
Images that felt relaxed, candid, and paid respect to her families multi-cultural background.
Most of their family portraits to date were formal and posed, often taken at weddings. This time, she wanted something more natural and true to them. With relatives traveling in from California, Tennessee, and Mississippi—and all visiting Colorado for the first time, they were looking for a setting that reflected the beauty and spirit of the Rocky Mountains.
We chose Mount Falcon West Trailhead in Indian Hills, just 40 minutes outside of Denver. It’s one of my favorite spots along the Front Range for sunset sessions. The open meadows, wide easy trails, rocky outcroppings, and expansive western views create a perfect canvas for natural family photography, especially in that golden hour glow.
Oyin shared that much of their extended family is Nigerian, and one spouse is Chinese. She said my background working internationally and photographing diverse communities resonated with her, and I was honored to be entrusted with telling their story.
When we met in the parking lot an hour and a half before sunset, I was immediately struck by their beautifully coordinated attire. It felt celebratory and genuine. The kids took off running down the trail, climbing trees, picking wildflowers, and scrambling over rocks. We moved slowly, capturing candid moments as they unfolded naturally, until we reached my favorite overlook just in time for a stunning sunset.
You can’t always count on magical light, but this evening delivered. The sky showed off in a beautiful live theater casting a warm, glowy backdrop over the mountains as we captured a mix of group portraits and playful, unposed images of the little ones being themselves. We laughed, swapped travel stories, and truly enjoyed the experience together. It was one of those sessions that leaves you feeling grateful.
If you have a multicultural family or simply want a meaningful photo experience in the Colorado mountains, I’d love to connect.
