A relaxed, natural, and joyful photo session capturing family connection among the red rocks

Meadow reached out to me from California with a special request- her entire large family was coming together in Colorado Springs from across the country for a reunion vacation, and she wanted to celebrate their time together with a photo session full of joy, love and genuine connection.

We chose Red Rock Canyon Open Space, one of my favorite spots for family photography in Colorado Springs. With wide open trails, dramatic red rock formations, and incredible golden hour evening light, it’s the perfect place for kids to run wild and families to accessibly enjoy the unique beauty of this special place. It gave us the perfect mix of nature, intimacy, mountain views and open space for this vibrant group to simply be themselves.

From the moment we met, I was struck by how full of life everyone was, and how beautifully coordinated their outfits were! The color palette was bold, bright, and full of personality, and it perfectly mirrored the spirit of the evening. The kids instantly took to exploring: climbing rocks, skipping along trails, and laughing with each other as the light danced across the canyon.

Throughout the session, we kept things playful and spontaneous, capturing both the unfiltered moments of exploration and laughter, and a few timeless group portraits of the whole family together. It’s not often that loved ones from California, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are all in the same place, and it was an honor to help preserve these treasured moments and memories

“We had a wonderful experience with Ryan, capturing three families together in the beautiful mountains near Colorado Springs. From first contact to final delivery of photos Ryan communicated promptly, kindly, and with attention to detail. We booked the shoot from California ahead of our vacation in Colorado, and Ryan delivered ideas for location with exactly the kind of detail and consideration that helped us pick the best place for our group. During our hour together he was personal- learning nearly everyone’s name and directing with calm command. He was patient and unruffled by the natural chaos of 13 people, including young kids, as we posed and played around our chosen location. He came prepared with ideas for shots to capture our family, and also he adapted ideas in the moment that were brilliant. He took both posed and candid shots, managing to take a picture of the whole group and then zoom in to capture the details of hands held, a single smiling face, the moment someone whispered to someone else. The pictures are treasures! They beautifully show our family enjoying ourselves together and I can’t wait to put them up on the wall! Thank you, Ryan!”
