A Surprise Proposal at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park

“Nick here. I know it’s last minute, but I plan on proposing to my girlfriend at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park this weekend, and I’m looking for a photographer who can capture us in a relaxed yet cinematic and unique way.”

“Oh, I’m in.”

I love photographing at the Stanley Hotel, and it’s hard to imagine a better place for a surprise proposal in Estes Park. Nick told me his girlfriend was into ghosts and all things spiritual, so he had planned an entire weekend around staying at the hotel, going out to dinner, taking a ghost tour and, somewhere in the middle of it all, asking her to marry him.

“This all sounds perfect,” I told him.

We decided the best approach was to keep the actual proposal simple and private. I would arrive early and stake out a tucked away spot on the front lawn with views toward the mountains. Nick would casually lead her in my direction while I sat on a rock, looking like I was another guest taking in the scenery. When he dropped to one knee, I’d be ready.

I arrived early, found the spot and got everything set up. Then Nick texted me.

The power had gone out at the Stanley Hotel while they were getting ready. His girlfriend was right in the middle of doing her hair and makeup. (They were getting dressed for what he told her was a nice dinner).

It would be a bit.

“No problem,” I told him. “I’m here. I’ll be ready.”

About 15 minutes later, they came down from their room and walked out onto the lawn. I did my best to blend in as they made their way toward me. Then Nick stopped, dropped to one knee and asked.

It was a yes.

Afterward, I gave them a few minutes to simply enjoy what had just happened before we started making our way around the Stanley Hotel for engagement portraits. They were willing to get creative and have fun with it, which opened up so many possibilities. We wandered through the historic staircases, old hallways, mirrors and windows, mixing natural moments with portraits that felt a little darker and more cinematic.

Later, Nick surprised her again. He had rented the outdoor patio just for the two of them, so we headed outside as evening settled over Estes Park. Rain began to fall, thunder cracked in the distance, champagne came out, and we kept photographing.

It ended up being a pretty beautiful evening.

The Stanley Hotel remains one of my favorite places for engagement and proposal photography in Estes Park. Between the historic interiors, grand staircases, ornate mirrors, mountain views and slightly eerie atmosphere, there are endless possibilities for creating photographs that feel different from a typical Colorado engagement session.
