Surprise Engagement at South Valley Park | Littleton, Colorado
A beautiful proposal shared with the entire family.
Brandon came to me with what sounded like a simple request:
To capture family photos while everyone was together for the holidays. But quietly, he was planning something more. By the end of the session, he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Maria—and what mattered most to him was that the moment stayed intimate and rooted in family. No one would know except his sister, Brooklyn.
From the moment we met at South Valley Park in Littleton, it felt easy. His family carried an incredible warmth. Energetic, kind and so naturally fun. Within minutes, I felt less like a photographer and more like part of the family. We spent time laughing, moving through the park, and capturing genuine family moments. Somewhere along the way, Brooklyn discreetly slipped the ring into my camera bag so Brandon could grab it when the moment came. Our quiet little secret.
A week earlier, Brandon and I had mapped everything out over a call. The plan was simple: toward the end of the session, we’d head down toward the red rock formations under the pretense of squeezing in a few final photos.
After some beautiful family images, I asked Brandon and Maria if they wanted to step in for a few last photos together. As they stood there, I could feel it—the shift. Brandon’s nerves. His focus. The weight of what was coming. After a couple of posed frames, he took a knee and asked Maria to be his wife.
Her reaction was instant and unfiltered. Surprise gave way to joy, and through laughter and tears she said, “I do. I do!” A hug. A kiss. And then the realization spread behind me—his parents and grandparents watching their son and grandson get engaged, something so rarely shared in real time with family. His mom wore the moment on her face—tears, laughter, and pure joy spilling out without restraint.
Everyone rushed in. Hugs all around. Celebration unfolding naturally. I was lucky to witness and feeze these ethereal and emotional moments.
Afterward, I stepped back and gave Brandon and Maria a few moments alone. No camera. No attention. Just space to breathe, walk, and let it sink in that they were now engaged. When we regrouped, we spent the last half hour chasing soft light as the sun dipped, capturing tender, celebratory moments of their love.
It was the first family-and-engagement session I’ve ever photographed—and one I won’t forget.

Here’s what Brandon shared afterward:
“We were able to work with Ryan to capture family pictures and a surprise engagement. Ryan did a fantastic job cultivating great energy during and after the moment. He had solid communication before and after the event, and the pictures look absolutely amazing. I would recommend Ryan to anyone looking for pictures without thinking twice.”
